Just had to blog about this here…At the risk of sounding like a broken record, we don’t get our yarns labelled for content/gauge here in India…So whenever I work with a pattern, I’m working on totally different materials and with a totally different hook as well. I’ve been encouraged by the posts of Sara
Gauge? Hook size? Feh! Who wants to live life so cautiously?
yes, I am crocheting without working up a gauge swatch first. Oh, the shame! I can see you’re swooning, feeling a bit faint from my confession, are ya? Go ahead, put a cool cloth on your forehead.
I am not alone! YAY!
So Cindy, you can add me to your list of gauge-defaulters.
Peggy’s Sunshine Garden doily (link is now defunct. Crochet Paradise is sorely missed) for my doily_of_the_month Yahoo group. Only mine looks more like Peggy’s Been Splashing In The Mud doily! Whatever you may have to say, I LIKE BROWNS!!! So there!
Very nice, Vera! All doily-lovers, please go read this post on her blog:
Yippee! Yesterday I braved the afternoon heat (Mad dogs, Englishmen and me) to the yarn shop and picked up a few things:
The bulk of it was this green unholy mess 570 grams (=20 oz) at Rs 199 (about US$ 4.50):

which I spent all of this morning turning into this (partly):

It will go into the Reflections poncho pattern I am testing for Dot.
But I bought a fair amount of thread. Yummiest was this in size 40 (don’t faint, I fell for its looks):
And also these in size 20 (ah, that’s better!):
All the threads are Anchor, holding about 20 grams (=0.71 oz) at Rs 38 each (just about US 90 c).
Then I also bought these polyester viscose threads which are also about size 20ish for Rs 40 each (again just less than one US$):
I love the shades in the green, which starts off as yellow. I don’t know what it is about variegated stuff…Though actually, it is very difficult to use in most patterns, I think. What do you think? Go on, tell me!
None of the threads has a pattern to go home to, although I think I might use some of it for my doily swap over at Crochetville.
Also a couple of Pony hooks, 0.75 mm and 3.50 mm, nothing to blog about.
All in all I blew up about Rs 400 (about US$9). Not bad for someone who professes to have no stash, eh?
I’d love to know how these prices compare with your experience where you live. Please tell me, I’m dying to know.
Here is my patchwork bolero folks. I was testing the pattern for Donna. The patchwork effect is totally unintended!

Here is how the back looks:
Ta-da! Here is my Carpenter Hat, which I made online! Meaning, I was chatting on the monthly Crochet-A-Thon from Crochetlist and having great fun, all at the same time as making this. And they said I couldn’t multi-task! I was testing this pattern for Jackie over at the Crochetville forums. She very kindly gave me permission to put up this photo here.
Hey! Who shrank my head when I wasn’t looking?!

But seriously, the CAT was great fun, and I didn’t feel like a firsttimer at all!!! It’s a good thing it only happens once a month, though, because it’s far too distracting and I had to tear myself away from the comp to go cook/clean/breathe/whatever.
Wow!
I’ve volunteered as pattern tester for a couple more things and now I’ve got lots of stuff to make from folks over at the Crochetville forum. Yay!
I’m almost through with the Claudia Bolero (I shall be calling it the patchwork bolero for reasons that will be obvious when I upload photos…).
Then I have a Carpenter Hat to do, as well as the thread angel set….It’s a bit overwhelming, but what fun!!!!
I’ve also jumped on the Crochetville RAOK bandwagon, and added my wishlist there. Found a couple of things I could do for other people, too.
Being in the forum is like a self-perpetuating cycle. The more you read, the more ideas you get, the more things you make and the more you want to post!!!
Boo hoo!
I thought I was using the same yarn! And it looks identical in some light, including in the fluorescent light when I used it last night. But in daylight and in flash conditions, here is what we have!!! There be ghosts and ghouls and yarns that change colour unseen…

I bought it all at the same time, except some of it has been languishing inside a metal bureau for some time. Do you suppose that was why it changed colour? **scratching head** Besides, it looks different only under the influence of flash or light through a window that has a sunfilm. Weird!
Here is how the yarn that I’m using looks. It’s very soft and about 10 wraps per inch. I bought it in Delhi, in unlabelled hanks.

I’m using a Pony 6 hook (5 mm) and the cardigan is working up very fast, just as I like! I’m a pattern tester for the first time. Yay!
This is my progress so far on the Evening shawl from Craftown.
Maybe a couple more rows and then I will fringe it.
Update: The shawl does have a nice scalloped edge naturally, but I might still fringe it, if only because I’m really, really scared of deviating from pattern!!! **nervously looking around**
